What this converter does

WEBP and AVIF are both modern compressed formats. Converting WEBP to AVIF does not restore quality lost when the WEBP was created. AVIF may sometimes produce a smaller file depending on the image and quality setting, but it is not always smaller. This is typically lossy-to-lossy recompression.

Convert WEBP to AVIF when optimizing an existing WEBP library for AVIF-capable delivery. Keep WEBP when browsers, CMSs, or CDNs do not accept AVIF yet.

How to convert WEBP to AVIF

  1. Upload your WEBP file. Drop one or more WEBP files into the upload area (max 200 MB each).
  2. Set AVIF quality. AVIF is re-encoded with the quality slider (default 90%). Encoding can take longer than JPEG or WEBP. Lower values usually mean a smaller file. This does not restore quality already lost in the source.
  3. Convert to AVIF. Press Convert to AVIF. Processing runs in your browser — the file is not uploaded to ImgTask's server.
  4. Download the result. Download the converted AVIF file when it is ready. Conversion stayed on your device.

WEBP to AVIF — both are already compressed

This is not an upgrade that recovers original camera or PNG detail. You are decoding a WEBP and encoding AVIF from those pixels. If the WEBP was already aggressive, another lossy pass can soften edges or add banding.

AVIF encoding can take longer than WEBP in the browser. Use a high quality setting when the image will be displayed large, and compare file size instead of assuming AVIF wins.

When keeping WEBP is better

Keep WEBP when your CMS, CDN, or email workflow does not accept AVIF, when encoding time matters, or when a test encode is not smaller at acceptable quality. Going back is AVIF to WEBP.

Formats, limits, and privacy

Upload limit: 200 MB per image, up to 20 files at once. Images above about 100 megapixels may fail in the browser. Conversion re-encodes pixels and strips EXIF, GPS, XMP, ICC, and DPI metadata; orientation is applied visually first. Animated sources use the first frame.

Limitations: Re-encoding may not shrink every file and can add further compression artifacts. Confirm AVIF support before replacing production assets. Animated WEBP is not preserved as animated AVIF.

Privacy: Your image is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to ImgTask's server. Image files never leave your device. No account is needed and results carry no watermark.
