Blur image backgrounds, wallpapers and previews

This tool lets you blur image files right in the browser, with a slider for strength and an instant before-and-after view. It works on the whole picture, which is exactly what you want for a soft backdrop behind a headline, a frosted wallpaper, a dreamy social post, or a teaser image that hints at something without showing it.

How to blur an image

You can re-apply with a different radius as many times as you like without uploading again.

Gaussian or Motion: what's the difference?

Gaussian blur

The classic soft-focus look. Each pixel is mixed with its neighbors, with the closest ones counting most, so edges melt away smoothly. It's the right choice for almost every background and wallpaper.

Motion (stronger spread)

The Motion setting applies roughly twice the spread of Gaussian at the same radius. It's useful when you need a very soft result without pushing the slider to the end. Note that it blurs evenly in all directions, so it won't create the streaky, one-direction effect of a long-exposure photo.

After blurring, you can make the file lighter with Compress Image. Blurred photos compress very well, because there's little fine detail left to store.

Tips for a better result

• Go lower on small images. The radius is measured in pixels. Very large photos are processed at a working size of about one megapixel, so a radius of 10 looks similar on any big photo, but on a 600-pixel thumbnail the same radius looks much stronger.
• Darken or lighten in your design tool. Text reads best on a blurred background that's also a bit darker or lighter. Add an overlay in Canva, Figma or PowerPoint after blurring.
• Don't rely on blur to hide secrets. For card numbers, addresses or names in screenshots, crop them out completely.
• Keep the original. Blur can't be undone, so save a copy of the sharp photo.

Formats and privacy

You can blur JPG, PNG, WEBP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP and TIFF images up to 250 MB each. The result keeps its format, apart from HEIC (saved as JPEG) and animated GIFs (a single blurred frame).

The blur runs on your own device. Your photos aren't uploaded, stored or seen by anyone at ImgTask, and the download carries no watermark.
